2011 - where i was, what was passing around me

2011 has been a long and strange year. At times it seemed itwould never end: t & m’s wedding was so far away, but in other moments it allseemed to be hurtling past me and I just couldn’t keep up: the moments werepiling on top of each other and I couldn’t seem to find space to breathe.

At some point in the year I lost myself in some sort ofmetaphorical hole and emerged with little memory of that precise space: onlyquestions of who was I, what did I want, who did I want to be, where did I wantto be, and where did I want to go.

Sitting here, now, on the last day of 2011, I find it hardto believe that this is real and that so many things happened only this year. DidI really fly to Sydney to see Carmen and eat copious amounts of food in Januarythis year? Did I really see the Antlers the same year I saw Seeker LoverKeeper? The first half of this year seems an age away, whilst the second halffeels like it was just yesterday.

Through it all various songs have floated around me; Adeleseemed to be everywhere but the rest of these songs are split between places I waspassing through and the places my friends and family brought me to andthrough. These songs are a record of those spaces and perhaps a hint at where I’llbe next.

To my wonderful friends and family, I love you all and thankyou for being with me through 2011.

In some sort of madness, last Friday and with only 6 days left in LightCycle, I decided to see if I could enter the competition. Perhaps it was meant to be, because when I rang up - someone had just returned kit number 50 and it was mine for the taking.

The State of Design Festival has become a firm feature in mine and my brother's calendar; and given our recent successful creative partnerships, the obvious thing to do was to rope my brother-frustrated creative and willing participant into my plan.

The last 6 days have been utterly draining as we've scrambled to design and assemble an entry. Below is the results of our struggles. If you're interested you can hop along to the exhibition and vote for our entry. :D

Cardboard City
Like a city block at night, this lightembodies our hope that future cities will be built and breath in an environmentallysustainable way. Made out of ordinary recycled and recyclable materials:cardboard boxes, empty handtowel rolls and milk bottles; the light callsus to reconsider how we view and use everyday things and materials.

As the ‘buildings’ and 'floors' ofthis light are not fixed, the light open to individual customization. Thisreminds us that we each have the capacity to change and improve our worldfor the better: we only have to choose so.

Papercutting - Tiger stripes for a tiger boy!

My nephew is moving into his new room soon. To mark this change, I made a papercut of his name, cutting out the letters in orange and black, before 'carving out' holes in the orange to create tiger stripes for a tiger boy.

I did a short course on painting last year and nervous about my ability to paint, chose to paint some apples. I got sick of these apples last year, but didn't mind them so much when I took them out earlier this week. One or two more sessions and these apples should be done. I think they're quite charming.

One night at the VCA course, we had to bring in examples of our work. Having not painted for such a long time, I didn't have anything to bring in. I've always loved paper cutting, and quickly (we're still talking two days here) put this together. Hopefully I'll find some more images that appeal equally to me, and make a series of this.

Various turns of events have ended up with me being enrolled in the VCA studio arts course, and in the painting stream!!!! The last time I painted regularly was sadly, about 10 years ago. This has left me feeling panicky about whether or not i'm able to paint and what will i produce this year??? Below are some of the things which have arise as a result of the course:

An acrylic painting based on a paper collage. My second go at acrylic paints and painted in one session.

This was the result of a masking activity, again using acrylic paints. The darkest blue is a bit too dark but i like the composition.

My first go at oil painting in a year. We learnt a blending technique. I've spent two sessions on this painting now and hopefully I'll get it done with a third session.

Behind that door is my bedroom. A space which I have occupied for over 20 years. Its walls demarcate the boundaries of my sole sovereign territory in this world: a place where I may do as I please, can always return, and am sure to be safe.

All that lies behind that door is utterly me: books, photos, cds, clothes, shoes, and an assorted tools and materials to create with. There is a bed, a bookshelf, a desk, a chair and a wardrobe.

But I am now 28. Behind that door is a space filled with frustration and restlessness. Amongst the lingering shadows of who I've been, stifled dreams are strewn across the walls and they pool on the floor. I am often absent; returning only to change, occassionally sleep and otherwise leave, at almost every given chance.

Behind that door could be anything, but at the same time, the possibilities have already been decided.

In May last year, Arthur wrote a little short story about my George and Beatnik as follows:

"Dear Diary,

I want to kill my friend George.
I haven't yet fully comprehended why this feeling is gushing out of me. All I know is that I will never be satisfied until I end him.
Is it his bovine features? His stupid blue scarf? The fact he has had only 2 baths his entire life?
Maybe is the incessant stream of sentences coming out of his mouth, talking about his 'supposed' girlfriend. Ha! As if a disgusting blob like him could ever get one.
Even when he's silent I want to slide a knife between his ribs. Watching his jaw move up and down as if he is chewing some imaginary cud is enough to make any sane man fill with blood lust.

I'm shaking with rage and nervous with anticipation. The moment will come soon and then George my friend. My only friend. You will die.

Nine months later, after a week of frentic activity, a crash course in drawing with MS Publisher, how to use Adobe Illustrator, and a lot of drawing with one finger on a touch pad I managed to convert my sketch into this:

life drawing - week 18/2010

Being there before 6.30pm, I safely scored a spot at No Vacancy last week where we had the lovely model Chloe. On the night, I was dismayed with my efforts, but now they look fine. I'm still enjoying charcoal, but indian ink seems to work better when I start with charcoal.

On Sunday at Princess Hill, three girls burst into the studio late. We plonk ourselves on the floor and gaze up at our model who glares down at us. It's my first large female model. I think I like lithographic paper and dry pastel.

Continuing Adventures in Life Drawing - No Vacancy/Princess Hill

My adventures in life drawing continue.

Sunday was spent at Princess Hill where I was thrown by the male model. 1.5 hours and only one sketch worked. But of all the sketches done that day (and some were really fantastic sketches full of movement), only mine struck the model as actually resembling him. His comment certainly made my day.

Tonight I managed to get into No Vacancy again (after having suffered its name last week for having arrived at 6.40pm). Ink wasn't the medium tonight, but charcoal, as I worked to capture tonight's model, Renuka.

Remixing is a real joy, building up tracks from scratch, savouring the purity of the acapella, unadultered, until you crap all over it with your faux-Kanye instrumentals.

One thing though, that really drives one to ear-gouging, head-against-brick-wall psychosis is a talented female vocalist with a voice richer than mudcake made from the purest Swiss chocolate drowned in honey served with Zooey Deschanel on top...(see Beyonce)...

...which is an awfully tortured metaphor to say that having Florence Welch in your ear for the better part of a week is equal parts great and maddening, because you want to create an instrumental to match her, and she'll be the first to let you know if you're letting the side down, the powerful bi-atch...enjoy!

I was using CoolEdit Pro at the time and I remember losing hours of my life neurotically getting the tempos of the tracks to match. My fondest memory is when a friend of mine mimed mashing me to a pulp when he heard how I'd mashed his (then) idol Damien Rice. Ha.

After the Dr Sketchy's afternoon I realized how much I enjoy sketching figures. As a poor man's substitute for having a model in my living room in the middle of the afternoon I decided to quick sketch off a photo reference and see how it went. I then got n.t. to send me a photo of her choice and I tried the same thing again. Two sketches from photo reference, both done in about 15 minutes. Hence the 15/60 challenge.

(Setting myself a few too many challenges this year: 15/60, Shirt52, and I haven't even started on a New Year's resolution to write ten songs by June, and have filmed a music video for one of those...)

Dr Sketchy's is a great concept for a life-drawing class - they usually hire performers from burlesque or other subculture backgrounds as their models, creating interesting textures and challenging subject material. Dave and I both attended Sunday's session and you can see our results below (Dave's on the left, n.t on the right).

This year, I'm trying to be a bit more creative. Two things are certainly on the cards - life drawing and painting. I've been to three life/model drawing sessions now. The first session was a hen's event and featured a very young model, the second session featured a trapeze artist, and the third was true life drawing with a classically curvy and dreamy model. It's been a steep learning curve and I was exhausted by the end of today's session. Drawing is hard work.

Dave threw the gauntlet down at me for this competition last month and having seen his mock up - i'm not sure i'm able to meet his challenge! His progress notes look fantastic and he's well on his way to realising his idea.

The brief has daunted me and i've spent weeks staring at and thinking about the giant burrow and what do i want to come out of it. In passing, i thought of a spiral that goes up as koko(black)pods and comes down as eggs, but it's rabbits that are coming out of the burrow for me.

My brother was getting married and rather than just stick up those paper double happinesses and letters spelling out their names in our house for the tea ceremony, I designed and made this poster.

The hardest part was making the double happiness stencil and stencilling the pattern on without having any idea of the principles of stencilling.

I had this idea to remix/mash-up Michael Jackson with the artists today most directly influenced by his model of singer/dancer/entertainer a little while back, and I've posted Billie Jean, Scream and I want you back previously on this blog. Since his passing I've rounded out the set with a few more tracks to make a complete mixtape. It's amazing how easily his music is transplanted into the current pop scene, although given the artists involved it's not all that surprising. Enjoy!

He's about to release his solo debut, Love and War, and the first single is "Change (feat Wale)." His record label has put out a remix contest for the track - so here's my effort:

last august i took 10 days off work to stay at home, rejuvinate and to try and do something creative. oil painting requires more room than i have, so i tried waterpainting instead. these are two of the better pieces that i produced.

Michael Jackson ft Justin Timberlake and Clipse - Billie Jean (studiogypsy remix)

This is my musical response to the remixes that latch onto the 25th anniversary re-release of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller', the biggest selling album of all time. Kanye West's version of 'Billie Jean' and will.i.am's remix of 'The girl is mine' are passable efforts mostly because the respective producers are wise enough to get out of the way of the musical juggernaut of the 80s. When the producers decide to try to recreate the Santana new-school-meets-old-school vibe in 'Wanna be startin' something' (Akon) and 'Beat it' (Fergie via will.i.am) the results are what you expect: even 25 years on Jackson's electric vocals remind you why he was the king, and why Akon and Fergie will be remembered only as mere bumfarts from the colon of commercial pop.

three of my favourite things are moons, lotuses and dragonflies. i drew the original sketch for this three years ago, but it took last christmas for me to cut it out of purple vinyl and stick it on my sliding door.
